Speech Pathologists with Medicare Provider numbers are able to offer services to families that include rebates through Medicare. The Words In Motion Speech Pathology therapists are all registered Medicare providers. Each Medicare Provider number relates to a particular therapist delivering a service from a certain location (for example, a clinical practice).
A number of Medicare items apply to Speech Pathology services. It can be a bit confusing even for the therapists, so here is some information that we hope will help to clarify things a little!
When looking to access Speech Pathology services for your child it is worthwhile discussing the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan with your GP. If you GP considers your child to be eligible for this program they will provide an EPC for your child, which includes a referral to a Speech Pathologist. If your child is already accessing speech therapy and you are wanting to use the EPC items with the same therapist, or if you have another therapist in mind you can request that the referral be made out to that therapist. Alternatively the GP will often have one or several therapists they tend to refer to or recommend. Once you have obtained the EPC you are then able to make an appointment with the Speech Pathologist.
It is vital that you take the EPC to the Speech Pathologist as they need to keep it for their records in order to maintain accountability for their Medicare Provider number. At Words In Motion Speech Pathology we are able to offer Medicare easyclaim, which means the rebate is processed and reimbursed to families at the conclusion of the session, saving you the trouble of having to make it to a Medicare office at a later time to claim your rebate. If in the rare instance a claim is not able to be processed on the spot, the therapist will issue you with an invoice that you can use to claim the rebate through medicare as per usual.
An EPC enables you to claim a maximum of five rebated sessions per calendar year. Please note that if you use any sessions with another therapist (even from another discipline such as Occupational therapy), these will count towards your total sessions for the calendar year.
The current rebate for Speech Pathology services under the EPC Plan (Item number 10970) is $51.95 (this is what you get back from Medicare).
The Helping Children with Autism (HCWA) package was developed in order to assist children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families to access services. There are a number of components to this package, the details of which are outlined on our autism funding page. This page details the Medicare rebates that are available when
accessing therapy services from a Speech Pathologist with a Medicare Provider number.
Medicare rebates are available to assist with diagnosis, when it is suspected that a child may have an autism spectrum disorder. This includes items to use with a Speech Pathologist as part of the diagnostic process. This rebate is available up until the child is 13 years of age. In order to access this rebate you must speak to you GP, who will make a referral to a Paediatrician or Psychiatrist, who will then make the referral to the Speech Pathologist for assessment.
The current rebate for Speech Pathology services for the assessment of an ASD (Item number 82005) is $73.40 (this is what you get back from Medicare).
Medicare rebates are also available to assist with the initial treatment for children after they have received a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder. This includes items to use with a Speech Pathologist as part of the treatment / therapy process. This rebate is available up until the child is 15 years of age. In order to access this rebate following your child receiving a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder, your Paediatrician or Psychiatrist will make a referral to the Speech Pathologist for treatment. The rebates are available for up to 20 Allied Health Treatment services. This means that 20 sessions in total (across a lifetime) are available for you to use with a Speech Pathologist and / or any other eligible Allied Health professionals (i.e. Occupational therapists, etc).
The current rebate for Speech Pathology services for treatment for a child with an ASD (Item number 82020) is $73.40 (this is what you get back from Medicare).
